The Disney Afternoon: Rewind

I was contracted as a pinch hitter on this project when a friend’s board game design company took over on the packaging design for Disney and their partner client, Maestro Media, for this nineties-nostalgia strategy board game series. The previous contractor had been resistant to feedback notes from both clients, and worse, had delivered files that the manufacturer couldn’t work with at deadline.
I was given two weeks to turn around a box design that Disney liked, in the correct file conventions they needed. Halfway through, I was given a different dieline size to reformat to, which added extra challenges. Once that box design was completed to Disney’s standards, I proceeded to design boxes for the other 5 games in the series, as well as the slip covers they’d go in, all while maintaining design conventions for one of the biggest entertainment corporations on earth. This is still under NDA, so please don’t share it!

Above: visualization mockup of final Gargoyles box. The design we went for was heavily inspired by plastic VHS clamshells from the 90s and early 2000s. The clamshell seam is a tromp’l’oeil design I created to mimic the look; the actual box seam is a fully enclosed lip going around the interior box.

Left: The Ducktales box, which was the box that required the two week pinch-hit turnaround. Green lines and numbers indicated fold lines and milimeter counts.
Below: custom “Disney Afternoon” logos I designed for Disney.

Left: Custom ‘90s arcade carpet’ pattern I designed for use in the game cards, and for Disney’s future use in marketing materials.

Right: Interior lip dieline, which doubles as a dice rolling tray. The design elements are taken from the dice face designs.

Both patterns are half-drop repeats.
